Sunscreen roller blinds are for the windows you want to look out of. The fabric is a tight mesh that cuts the glare and most of the UV coming through the glass, while you can still see the garden, the street or the view. From outside in daylight, the window reads as a dark panel and people cannot see in.

They suit living rooms, kitchens, home offices and big expanses of glass where a blockout would feel like a wall. We make them to your measurements, DIY online or measured and fitted in Melbourne.

How sunscreen fabric works

Sunscreen is a woven mesh, usually a coated polyester or fibreglass yarn. The weave leaves small openings that let light and view through while the yarn blocks a large share of the heat and UV. The openness factor is the percentage of the fabric that is open weave. A lower number means a tighter weave: more shade, more daytime privacy, less view. A higher number keeps more of the view and lets in more light.

Colour changes the result more than people expect. Dark fabrics are easier to see through from inside because they cut glare on the mesh itself. Light fabrics reflect more heat and brighten the room but the view is hazier. If the room gets hot, lean darker or tighter. If the room is dim, lean lighter.

Privacy: day and night

During the day, the brighter side of the glass is the outside, so the mesh acts like a one-way screen and people cannot see in. At night it reverses. With the lights on inside and dark outside, the room is visible from the street through a sunscreen.

That is the one thing to plan for. On a bedroom or a street-facing living room, pair the sunscreen with a blockout on a double roller bracket, or add a curtain. On a window that faces a fence or a garden, it may not matter at all.

Best rooms for sunscreen roller blinds

Living and dining rooms with a view, kitchens, home offices where screen glare is the problem, stairwells and big sliding doors. They are also the usual choice on north and west windows that get a lot of afternoon sun but where you still want the light and the outlook.

Outdoor versions of the same mesh are used for alfresco blinds. If you are after shade on a patio or deck rather than a window, look at outdoor roller blinds.

Fit, control and care

Sunscreen blinds fit inside the recess or on the face like any roller blind. Because light control is not the goal, a recess fit with its small edge gaps is fine in most rooms. Chain operation with a child-safe tensioner is standard, and motorisation is available for wide doors and high windows.

Care is simple: vacuum the mesh with a brush head now and then, or wipe it with a damp cloth. The fabric does not hold dust the way a curtain does.

Sunscreen Roller Blinds questions

Can people see through sunscreen blinds at night?

Yes, when the lights are on inside and it is dark outside. For night privacy pair the sunscreen with a blockout on a double roller or add a curtain.

Do sunscreen blinds block heat?

They block a good share of solar heat and most UV while keeping the view. Tighter weaves and darker colours block more. A blockout fabric blocks more heat again but you lose the view.

What openness should I choose?

A tighter weave for more shade and privacy, a more open weave for more view. Order free samples and hold them to the glass at the brightest time of day to compare.

Are sunscreen blinds good for bedrooms?

Only with a blockout behind them. On their own they do not darken the room or give night privacy.

Can I order sunscreen roller blinds online?

Yes. Measure with our guide, choose the fabric and options, and we make them and ship Australia-wide. In Melbourne you can book a free measure and quote instead.
