Roller blinds are a single sheet of fabric on a tube, raised and lowered with a chain or a motor. They are the most popular blind in Australian homes because they suit nearly every window, take up almost no space, and come in blockout, sunscreen and light filtering fabrics. A double roller puts a sunscreen and a blockout on one bracket so you get the view by day and a dark room at night.

Roller blinds: blockout, sunscreen, double and DIY

Roman blinds are a flat fabric panel that folds up into neat horizontal pleats as you raise it. They give you the softness of a curtain in the footprint of a blind, which is why they suit living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens where a roller looks too plain. Lined and blockout versions darken a room; sheer and light filtering versions soften the light without closing the room off.

Roman blinds: fabrics, lining and how they work

Venetian blinds are horizontal slats you tilt for light and raise to clear the window. Aluminium venetians are slim, wipeable and suited to kitchens and bathrooms. Timber venetians bring warmth to living rooms and studies. PVC or faux wood venetians give the timber look in a material that shrugs off moisture.

Venetians are measured, made and fitted by us. The slat width and material are the two decisions, and we bring samples of both to the measure.

Almost every blind type on this page can be motorised. A battery or mains motor replaces the chain or cord, a remote runs the blind, and a hub adds phone and voice control and schedules. Motors earn their place on wide blinds, high windows, banks of blinds you want to run together, and homes with young children where you would rather have no cords at all.

If you already have roller blinds, a retrofit motor fits inside most tubes without replacing the blind.

Motorised blinds and retrofit motors

Bedrooms want darkness and privacy, so a blockout roller or a lined roman are the usual picks. If the bedroom has a view, a double roller gives you the sunscreen by day and the blockout by night. Living rooms are the opposite: you want the light and the outlook, so sunscreen rollers, sheer romans and venetians on the feature windows all work.

Kitchens and bathrooms need something that copes with steam and splashes. A venetian or a wipeable roller fabric are the safe choices; keep fabric romans away from the sink. Sliding doors and wide openings take a wide roller, two rollers side by side on one bracket, or an S-fold curtain. Home offices want glare control on the screen, so a sunscreen roller is the usual answer.

Cold rooms, and Melbourne has plenty, benefit most from a blockout roller fitted close to the glass, or a lined roman. A face fit blind with a pelmet traps more air than a recess fit and is worth asking about on a south-facing window.
