An outdoor roller blind is a roller blind built for the weather: a heavier tube, a weighted bottom bar, UV-stable fabric, and brackets that fix to posts, beams or brick. It rolls up out of the way when the day is good and drops to close an opening when the sun or the rain comes in.
They are the building block of most alfresco enclosures. One across the open side of a pergola, two or three around a deck, or one across a carport. We make them to your opening, DIY online or measured and fitted in Melbourne.
Where outdoor roller blinds work
Anywhere there is a beam or fascia above and something to fix to on each side. The open sides of a pergola or verandah, a deck under the eaves, the gap between the house and the garage, and balconies where the balustrade gives the bottom bar a place to land. They also work on large windows and sliding doors from the outside, where they stop heat before it reaches the glass.
The fabric sets the job. A mesh blind keeps the sun and glare off and gives daytime privacy while the air still moves. A clear PVC blind keeps rain and wind chill out and turns the space into a room for winter.
Open tube or channel-guided
A basic outdoor roller hangs freely with the bottom bar pinned or strapped at the floor. It is simple and suits sheltered spots. A channel-guided version runs the fabric edges inside side channels on the posts, so there are no gaps at the sides, no flapping, and the blind holds at any height. That is the version for exposed decks and anywhere the wind gets in.
Both can have a headbox that hides the roll when the blind is up, or an open roll under the beam where a neater look is not the priority.
Spring, crank or motor
Spring operation pulls down by hand and retracts on the spring. It suits smaller spans and the price-conscious. A crank handle drives a gearbox and gives smooth control on larger blinds. A motor does the work from a remote and is the choice when the blind is wide, high, or one of several you want to run together. Motorised blinds can join a smart hub for app control and schedules.
Fitting and DIY install
The brackets fix to the beam, the fascia or the underside of the roof framing, and the channels, if any, fix to the posts. Timber takes coach screws, steel needs self-drilling screws, brick needs a masonry bit and anchors. We supply the fixings for the surface you tell us about.
DIY install is a two-person job on anything wide, and you need a ladder, a drill and a level. The install guide walks through it. If the opening is high, out of square, or the site is exposed, Melbourne customers can have us measure and fit instead.

Measuring for an outdoor roller blind
Measure the width between the fixing surfaces at the top and the bottom and give us both. Measure the drop from the underside of the beam or fascia to where the bottom bar should land. Note the fixing surface on each side and at the top, and anything in the way such as downlights, fans or gutters.

What is the difference between outdoor roller blinds and indoor roller blinds?
Outdoor blinds use a heavier tube, a weighted bottom bar, weather-rated fabric and brackets made for posts, beams and brick. Indoor blinds are lighter and not built for sun and rain.
Can outdoor roller blinds be left down in the wind?
Channel-guided blinds can, because the fabric is held on every edge. Open tube blinds should be rolled up in strong wind.
Do outdoor roller blinds keep rain out?
Clear or tinted PVC blinds do. Mesh blinds provide shade and a wind break but rain will come through in wind.
Can I install outdoor roller blinds myself?
Yes, with a drill, a ladder and a second person for wide blinds. We ship brackets and fixings for your fixing surface with an install guide. In Melbourne we can fit them for you.
