Shutters are the most solid window covering you can fit. Instead of a fabric that rolls or draws, you get panels of adjustable blades held in a frame built for the opening. Tilt the blades for light and privacy, swing or slide the panels open when you want the whole window. They do not fade, fray or tangle, and they look as good from the footpath as they do from the couch.
This page covers the whole range. Plantation shutters are the indoor product: PVC panels with adjustable blades, made for wet areas and standard windows alike. Outdoor roller shutters are the outdoor product: aluminium slats that roll down over a window or door from a box above it, for heat, noise, light and security. Each has its own page below with more detail.
Shutters are not a DIY product in our range. A frame has to match the opening exactly, so we measure on site, make to order and fit the finished shutters ourselves. The measure and quote is free across Greater Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.
Plantation shutters
Plantation shutters are what most people mean when they say shutters. Wide, flat blades sit in a panel, the panel sits in a frame, and the frame is fixed inside or around the window. Hinged panels swing open like a small door, bi-fold panels concertina to one side, and sliding panels run on a track where there is no room to swing.
They suit almost any window in the house: bedrooms, living rooms, bay windows, sliding doors and the window above the kitchen sink. We make them in PVC, which handles every one of those rooms, including the wet ones.
PVC plantation shutters
PVC is the all-rounder. The blades and stiles are a polymer with a painted finish, so water does not swell them and steam does not lift the paint. That makes PVC the right pick for bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and any window near a tap or a bath.
It also suits standard windows through the rest of the house. The finish is a clean white or off-white that wipes down with a damp cloth. Very wide panels need support, so wide openings are split into more panels or reinforced, which we plan at the measure.
Outdoor roller shutters
Outdoor roller shutters are a different product from plantation shutters. A curtain of interlocking aluminium slats rolls down from a box fixed above the window or door and runs in side channels, so when it is closed the opening is covered edge to edge. Closed, it stops heat and light before they reach the glass, cuts street noise, and puts a solid barrier between the window and anyone outside.
Roll it up and the window is clear. Operation is a manual strap or winder, or a motor with a remote for the windows you use every day. Roller shutters are measured on site and made to order.
Window shutters vs blinds
Blinds are the lighter, quicker option. A roller blind or a roman blind is made from fabric, costs less to make, and is available DIY online. Shutters are a fixed fit-out: solid panels in a frame, measured and installed by us, and built to stay with the house.
Choose shutters where you want the look from the street, where steam and splashes would wear a fabric out, or where you want adjustable light without a fabric in the way. Choose blinds where you want a soft finish, full blockout in a bedroom, or a product you can order and fit yourself. Many homes use both: shutters on the front windows and wet areas, blinds in the bedrooms.
Shutters for Melbourne homes
Melbourne houses give shutters plenty of work. Period homes in the inner suburbs have tall sash windows and bay windows that suit hinged PVC panels. New builds in the south east and west have wide sliding doors and open-plan living that suit bi-fold panels. West-facing bedrooms that cook in summer, and homes on busy roads, are where outdoor roller shutters earn their place.

Plantation shutters or roller shutters?
The two shutter types do different jobs. Homes that want both put plantation shutters inside and roller shutters on the hot or noisy side of the house.

DIY measuring
How shutters are measured
You do not need to measure. A shutter frame has to fit the opening exactly, and a few millimetres out of square shows as a gap you cannot adjust away. So we do it on site: frame type, a square check at each corner, reveal depth, handle and winder clearance, and panel layout.
Before we come, a rough list of the windows or outdoor openings you want done is useful so we bring the right samples and allow enough time. If you are building, plans give an indicative figure, but we measure the finished openings before anything is made.

What types of shutters do you fit?
PVC plantation shutters for indoor windows and doors, and aluminium outdoor roller shutters that roll down over windows and doors from the outside.
Can I buy shutters DIY?
Not in this range. Shutters need exact frame measurements and square checks, so we measure, make to order and fit them ourselves across Melbourne. The measure and quote is free.
Are PVC shutters right for a bathroom?
Yes. PVC handles steam and splashes without swelling or lifting the paint, which is why it is the material we fit.
Are shutters better than blinds?
They do different jobs. Shutters are a permanent, solid fit-out with adjustable blades. Blinds are fabric, lighter, available DIY and better for full blockout. Many homes use both.
Do shutters block out light?
Closed blades block most light but a little comes through at the blade edges. For a fully dark bedroom we can pair shutters with a blockout blind behind them.
Can you fit shutters outdoors?
Yes. Outdoor roller shutters are made for the outside of the house: aluminium slats in a box above the window, rolling down in side channels for heat, noise and security.
