PVC outdoor blinds are the blinds you drop when the weather turns. A clear or tinted PVC sheet on a heavy roller tube closes an opening completely, so rain, wind and cold stay outside and the alfresco becomes a room you can heat, with the view kept.
They run in side channels as zip screen blinds on exposed sites, or on an open tube where the area already has some shelter. We make them to your opening, DIY online or measured and fitted in Melbourne.
Clear and tinted PVC outdoor blinds
Clear PVC is the standard. It lets in all the light and keeps the outlook, so the space feels open even when it is closed.
Tinted PVC is the same sheet with a smoke or bronze tone. It takes the edge off glare and still keeps rain and wind out. Choose it on a west-facing side that gets afternoon glare.
Keeping rain and wind out of an alfresco
Dropped and secured, a PVC blind stops rain blowing in sideways, cuts the wind chill, and holds the warmth from a single heater. An alfresco with PVC on the weather side gets used through a Melbourne winter.
For the seal to work, the blind has to be held on its edges. Channel-guided PVC blinds run inside aluminium channels on the posts and close the gap on both sides. On a sheltered verandah an open-tube blind does a fair job, but wind finds the edges.
PVC vs mesh outdoor blinds
Mesh cuts sun, glare and UV and lets the air through, but lets rain through in wind. PVC keeps the weather out entirely but traps heat in full sun. The usual answer is both: PVC on the side the rain arrives from, mesh on the north and west sides.
Care and cold-weather handling
PVC stiffens in the cold. On a frosty morning the sheet is rigid and rolling it up can crease or crack it, so wait until the day warms and roll it up when the sheet is soft.
Clean it with water and a soft cloth, never anything abrasive or a harsh solvent, which clouds the sheet. Let it dry before rolling it up, and keep it away from sharp edges and the hot side of a heater.
