Roller blinds are the simplest window covering to live with. One chain or one motor, a clean line across the window, and a fabric choice that runs from full blockout for bedrooms to sunscreen that keeps the view and cuts the glare. They suit almost every window in a house, which is why they are the product most people start with.

Below is what you need to choose between: the fabric types, single or double rollers, chain or motor, and whether to fit inside the window recess or on the face of the wall.
Blockout roller blinds
Blockout fabric is coated so no light passes through the material itself. Pull the blind down and the room goes dark enough to sleep in, and nobody outside can see in, day or night. It is the right choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and any west-facing window that cooks a room in the afternoon.
One thing to know: a roller blind is a flat sheet of fabric on a tube, so there is always a small gap at each side of the fabric where it clears the brackets. On a recess fit you will see a thin line of light down each edge in the morning. A face fit blind made wider than the window covers those gaps, and a pelmet or cassette over the top closes the light that comes over the roll. If total darkness matters, say so and we will set it up that way.
Blockout fabrics come in plain weaves, textured finishes and a wide range of colours, so they do not have to look heavy. The back of the fabric facing the street is usually white or a pale neutral, which keeps the look consistent from outside.
Sunscreen roller blinds
Sunscreen fabric is an open weave mesh. It cuts glare and most of the UV that fades floors and furniture, while letting you see out during the day. Living rooms, kitchens, offices and anywhere with a view or a lot of glass are the usual spots.
The trade-off is privacy after dark. With the lights on inside and dark outside, a sunscreen blind is see-through from the street. That is why sunscreens are often paired with a blockout on a double bracket, or used on windows that do not face neighbours.
Sunscreens are rated by openness, which is the percentage of the weave that is open. A tighter weave gives more shade and more daytime privacy; a more open weave keeps more of the view. Darker colours are easier to see through from inside, lighter colours reflect more heat. Order free samples and hold them up to the window before you decide.
Light filtering roller blinds
Light filtering fabric sits between the two. It is a closed weave, so you cannot see through it in either direction, but it lets a soft, even light into the room. Think of it as privacy without darkness.
It works well in bathrooms, living areas that do not need to go dark, and rooms where you want the window covered during the day without the cave effect of a blockout. It is not a sleep blind. If a streetlight or an early sunrise bothers you, pick blockout or pair the two on a double roller.
Double roller blinds (day and night)
A double roller blind is two blinds on one bracket set: usually a sunscreen at the front for the day and a blockout behind it for the night. You get the view and glare control during the day, full privacy and darkness when you want it, and only one set of brackets on the wall.
They are the most common choice for bedrooms with a view, living rooms that double as a TV room, and apartments where the windows face other buildings. Each blind has its own chain, or both can be motorised and run from the one remote.
Double brackets are deeper than single ones, so check the depth of your window recess if you want them fitted inside. Where the recess is shallow, a face fit on the architrave or wall is the usual answer.
Custom made vs DIY roller blinds
Both lanes give you the same product: a blind made to your sizes in the fabric you chose. The difference is who measures and who installs.
DIY online suits anyone comfortable with a tape measure and a drill. You measure each window following our guide, enter the width and drop, choose the fabric, control side and fit type, and we make the blind to those numbers and ship it with brackets, screws and an install guide. It is the cheaper route because you are doing the site work yourself, and it is the only option if you are outside Melbourne.
Custom made and fitted is for Melbourne homes where you want it handled. We come out with fabric samples, measure every window, talk through the options in the room itself, and leave you a written quote. When the blinds are made we come back and fit them. You are paying for our time on site, and in return the measuring risk is ours, not yours.
Motorised roller blinds
Any roller blind we make can be motorised instead of chain operated. The motor sits inside the tube, runs on a rechargeable battery, and is controlled by a handheld remote. Add a smart hub and you can run the blinds from your phone, put them on a schedule, or ask a voice assistant.
Motors make the most sense on wide blinds, high windows, banks of three or more blinds in one room, and any home with small children where you would rather not have chains at all. If you already have roller blinds, our retrofit motors fit inside most existing tubes, so you do not have to replace the blind to automate it.

How to measure for roller blinds
Decide first whether the blind will sit inside the window recess (recess or inside fit) or on the wall or architrave around it (face or outside fit). Recess fit looks neater and needs a recess deep enough for the bracket. Face fit covers more of the window, blocks more light at the edges, and is the answer when the recess is shallow or out of square.
For a recess fit, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure, then the drop at the left, middle and right and use the smallest. We make the deductions so the blind clears the recess. For a face fit, measure the area you want covered. Going wider than the window on each side and higher above it improves light control.

What is the difference between blockout and sunscreen roller blinds?
Blockout fabric stops light passing through and gives full privacy, so it suits bedrooms and media rooms. Sunscreen fabric is an open weave that cuts glare and UV while keeping your view out during the day, but it is see-through at night with the lights on. Many people fit both as a double roller blind.
