Motorised blinds remove the chains and cords. That makes them the safest option in a house with small children, the only practical option for high or hard to reach windows, and the easiest way to run a bank of blinds in one go. Put them on a schedule and they open with the morning and close before the evening sun, without anyone touching them.
You do not have to replace your blinds to get this. Our retrofit motors fit inside most existing roller blind tubes, replace the chain mechanism, and take about ten minutes to install. New blinds can be ordered motorised from the start, and the same motors and remotes run outdoor blinds and S-fold curtains.
Everything runs on rechargeable batteries charged with a USB-C cable, so there is no electrician and no wiring. Below is what the options are, how control works, and what to check before you order a motor for an existing blind.
Motorised roller blinds
A motorised roller blind has a tube motor in place of the chain mechanism. The motor sits inside the tube at one end, the battery is built in or sits in a small pack alongside, and the blind looks exactly like a chain blind from the room, minus the chain. Press the remote and it rolls to the top, the bottom, or a favourite position in between.
Order a new roller blind motorised and the motor comes fitted. Blockout, sunscreen, light filtering and double rollers can all be motorised, and a double roller gets two motors on separate remote channels so the blockout can drop without moving the sunscreen.
Where they pay off: wide blinds that are heavy to chain, windows above a kitchen bench or stairwell, a living room with four or five blinds, and any bedroom where a chain within a child's reach is a worry.
Retrofit blind motors for existing blinds
If your roller blinds are in good shape, a retrofit motor is the cheapest route to automation. The motor kit replaces the chain control at one end of the tube. You take the blind down, pull the chain mechanism out, push the motor in, put the blind back on its brackets, and pair the remote. Most people are done in about ten minutes per blind.
The one thing to check is the tube. Retrofit motors fit most standard roller blind tubes, but tube diameters vary, so measure the inside of yours and compare it with the motor listing before you order. The blind width and drop matter too, because a very large blind needs more torque than a small one.

Smart blinds: app, schedule and voice control
A handheld remote is standard. A smart hub is the upgrade. Add a Bond Bridge hub to your Wi-Fi and the blinds appear in an app on your phone, where you can move them from anywhere, group them by room, and set schedules: sunscreens down at two in the afternoon on the west side, blockouts down at bedtime, everything up at seven.
The hub also connects the blinds to Google Home, Alexa and Apple Home, so you can ask for the blinds to close without finding the remote. Smart blinds are the same motorised blinds with a hub added, not a different product, which means any motor we sell can become a smart blind later.
Motorised curtains
Curtains motorise as well as blinds. An S-fold curtain motor drives the track so the curtain glides open and closed from a remote, the app or a voice command. It suits wide sheers across a living room, floor to ceiling drops, and layered sheer and blockout curtains where you want each on its own channel.

Battery, hardwired or solar power
Rechargeable battery is the standard and what almost every home uses. The battery lives in the motor or a slim pack beside it, charges with a USB-C cable, and lasts months between charges depending on the size of the blind and how often it moves. The motor tells you when it is getting low, and charging takes a cable and a wall plug, not a tradesperson.
Hardwired motors run off mains power through a transformer. They are the choice for large commercial jobs and new builds where an electrician is already on site and cabling can be run before the plaster goes on. Solar is an option for outdoor and hard to reach blinds where there is sun on the headbox and charging a battery would be awkward. Tell us the situation and we will advise which suits.
Motorised outdoor blinds
Outdoor blinds are where motors earn their keep. A wide channel-guided blind across a deck is heavy to wind by crank, and an alfresco with three or four blinds takes a while to close by hand when the rain arrives. A motor per blind and one remote drops the lot in seconds, and a hub lets you do it from the couch or on a schedule.
Outdoor motors are built for the weather and can be battery, hardwired or solar depending on the site.

How to measure for motorised blinds
For a retrofit motor on an existing roller blind, measure the inside diameter of the blind tube at the chain end and compare it with the motor listing. Then note the blind width and drop, because a large or heavy blind needs a motor with more torque. Count how many blinds you want on one remote, since each blind takes a channel and a remote has 15.
For new motorised blinds, measure exactly as you would for a chain roller blind: recess or face fit, width and drop at three points each, in millimetres. The motor adds nothing to the measurement. For curtains, measure the track width and the drop as in the curtain guide.

Can I motorise my existing roller blinds?
In most cases yes. A retrofit motor replaces the chain mechanism inside the blind tube. Measure the inside diameter of the tube and check it against the motor listing in our shop, or ask us.
Do motorised blinds need an electrician?

How do I control motorised blinds?

How long does the battery last?

Can one remote control several blinds?
