Blockout curtains stop light passing through the fabric. Draw them and a bedroom is dark enough to sleep in past sunrise, the street cannot see in at any hour, and the window loses far less heat on a cold night. They are the curtain for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and any room that gets too hot in the afternoon.
We make them as a coated blockout fabric, or as a face fabric of your choice with a blockout lining sewn behind it. Order DIY online or book a free measure and quote in Melbourne.
Coated blockout or lined curtains
A coated blockout is a single fabric with a light-blocking layer bonded to the back. It is the simpler, lighter option and comes in plains and textures. A lined curtain is a decorative face fabric, such as a linen or a heavier weave, with a separate blockout lining behind it. It gives you the widest choice of colour and texture on the room side, hangs heavier, and insulates better.
A thermal lining is a middle option: it adds insulation and cuts most light but is not full blockout. Use it on living rooms that are cold in winter but do not need to go dark.
Getting the room dark
Light comes around a curtain, not through it. Fit the track wider than the window so the curtain overlaps the wall on each side, and higher so there is no gap above. Ceiling fixing closes the top gap completely. Where two curtains meet in the middle, a centre overlap stops the line of light. For the darkest result, run the blockout on the back track of a double track behind a sheer and let the sheer cover the edges.
Heat, cold and noise
A blockout curtain traps a layer of still air against the glass. In winter that slows heat loss through the window, and in summer the coated or lined fabric stops radiant heat from a west-facing pane. Heavier lined curtains also soften noise from a road. For the best result, fit the curtain close to the wall and down to the floor so the air pocket is sealed.
Headings, tracks and motors
S-fold is the usual heading and gives a blockout a modern look. Pinch pleat suits heavier lined fabrics and traditional rooms. Tracks in white or black, ceiling or wall fixed, single or double. Blockouts are heavier than sheers, so on a wide span a wand or a motor makes them easier to draw. A motorised blockout on a schedule is the simplest way to keep a bedroom cool through the afternoon.

DIY measuring
Measuring for blockout curtains
Measure the track width well past the window on each side, and the drop from the track position to the floor at three points, using the smallest. Ceiling fix if you can. Tell us the floor finish. For a double track, measure for the front sheer and we allow for the second runner.

Blockout Curtains questions
Do blockout curtains block all light?
They block all light through the fabric. Light can still come around the edges, so fit the track wider and higher than the window, ceiling fix if possible, and overlap the curtains in the centre.
Coated blockout or a lined curtain?
Coated is lighter and simpler. Lined gives you any face fabric, hangs heavier and insulates better. Both are full blockout.
Do blockout curtains keep a room warmer?
Yes. They trap still air against the glass and slow heat loss. Fit them close to the wall and to the floor for the best result.
Can blockout curtains be S-fold?
Yes. S-fold is the most common heading we make them with. Pinch pleat is the alternative for a classic look.
Can I order blockout curtains online?
Yes. Measure with our guide, choose the fabric from free samples, and we make and ship them with the track Australia-wide. Melbourne customers can book a free measure and quote instead.
