Thermal curtains are built to slow heat moving through a window. Glass is the weakest point in most Melbourne homes: warm air cools against it in winter and radiant heat pours through it in summer. A thermal curtain puts an insulating layer in front of the glass.
They are made with a thermal lining or a coated backing behind the fabric you choose, cut to cover the whole frame and reach the floor. DIY online or measured and fitted in Melbourne.
How thermal curtains cut heat loss
Three things do the work. The lining: a dense thermal lining or coated backing that slows heat through the fabric. The air gap: a closed curtain close to the window traps still air against the glass, and still air insulates. And coverage: heat escapes around the edges as easily as through the fabric, so the curtain needs to cover the frame, overlap the wall and reach the floor.
A curtain that stops short of the floor lets warm air drop behind it, cool against the glass and spill out at the bottom. That is the draught people feel on a cold night. In summer the same layers reflect radiant heat before it warms the room.
Thermal vs blockout curtains
There is a lot of overlap. A blockout curtain uses a coated fabric or lining to stop light, and that coating also slows heat. A thermal curtain is chosen for insulation first and may let a glow through a linen or a light fabric. For a bedroom you want dark and warm, choose a blockout lined curtain. For a living room where you want daytime light, choose a thermal lining behind a fabric you like. Both need width past the frame and floor length.
Pelmets and floor length
A pelmet is a box or board across the top of the curtain that closes the gap between the track and the wall. Without it, warm air flows over the top, down the cold glass and out the bottom. A ceiling-fixed track does a similar job.
At the bottom, the curtain should touch the floor or sit just above it. Floor length with an overlap onto the wall on each side gives the best seal.
Thermal curtains for Melbourne winters and summers
Melbourne has cold, damp winters and hot summer afternoons. In winter thermal curtains keep the heater's warmth in the room, so it warms faster and stays warm longer. In summer, drawn through the afternoon on a north or west window, they keep radiant heat out. They suit single-glazed older homes, weatherboard and brick veneer houses, and apartments with large glass walls.
Headings and tracks for thermal curtains
S-fold on a ceiling-fixed track closes the top gap without a pelmet. Pinch pleat sits well behind one. Tracks should extend past the window, and a double track lets you run a sheer in front for daytime light.
Curtain linings compared
| Lining | Light control | Insulation | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal lining | Partial, some glow | Good | Living rooms, studies |
| Blockout lining | Full | Good | Bedrooms, media rooms |
| Coated blockout fabric | Full | Good, single layer | Simple bedroom curtains |

DIY measuring
Measuring for thermal curtains
Measure wider and longer than you would for a decorative curtain: the track width with an overlap past the frame on each side, and the drop from the track to the floor. Note the ceiling height if you want a ceiling-fixed track or a pelmet.

Thermal Curtains questions
Do thermal curtains really keep a room warmer?
Yes, when they cover the whole window, reach the floor and close at the top. The lining slows heat through the fabric and the trapped air stops warm air cooling against the glass.
Are thermal curtains the same as blockout curtains?
Not always. Blockout curtains stop light and also insulate. Thermal curtains are chosen for insulation and may let some light through. A blockout lined curtain does both jobs.
Do thermal curtains help in summer?
Yes. Drawn through the afternoon, the lining reflects radiant heat at the glass before it warms the room.
Do I need a pelmet?
You get a better result with one, or with a ceiling-fixed track. Either closes the gap at the top.
Can I order thermal curtains online?
Yes. Measure with our guide, choose the fabric and lining, and we make them and ship Australia-wide.
