S-fold curtains, also sold as wave fold, hang from a track on evenly spaced gliders so the fabric falls in continuous S-shaped waves from top to bottom. Nothing shows above the fabric, the folds stay even whether the curtain is open or closed, and the curtain stacks back into a tight, neat bundle. It is the heading used in most new homes and apartments, and the one we recommend for sheers.

We make S-fold curtains in sheer, blockout and lined fabrics, to your track width and drop. Order DIY online and the track ships with the curtain. In Melbourne, we measure, fit the track and hang them.

How S-fold curtains work

The heading tape has a cord or a row of pockets that sets the spacing of the gliders. Each glider clips into the track, and because they are fixed at an even distance apart, the fabric between them forms the same wave every time. The fullness comes from making the curtain at around twice the track width, so there is enough fabric to form the waves without flattening out when closed.

The track is slim and sits close to the ceiling or wall. It can be ceiling fixed for the cleanest look, or wall fixed on brackets. A double track runs a sheer and a blockout side by side on one fitting.

Sheer or blockout S-fold

S-fold works on both. Sheers are the classic use: a light, linen look weave in white or a neutral, falling in soft waves across floor to ceiling glass. Blockouts in S-fold give a bedroom a modern look without the heavier pleated heading. A blockout fabric is stiffer, so the waves are a little more defined and the stack is a little deeper than a sheer.

For bedrooms, the usual answer is both: sheer on the front track, blockout on the back, one ceiling fixing.

Tracks, wands and stacking

Tracks come in white or black. Curtains can stack to the left, to the right, or open from the centre as a pair. Hand drawn is fine for small windows. A wand gives you a clean pull without handling the fabric, and comes in 900, 1200 and 1500 mm lengths so it is in easy reach on a tall drop. A motor at the end of the track moves the curtain by remote, and can be added later to most S-fold tracks.

Allow for stack-back when you size the track: the curtain needs room past the glass to bunch into when open, or it will always cover part of the window.

Motorised curtains

Floor finish and hems

Tell us how the curtain should meet the floor. Just off the floor clears the boards and is easiest to keep clean. Touching the floor looks tailored. Puddled drops extra fabric onto the floor for a soft, full look. Sheers are finished with a lead weight hem so the waves hang straight; heavier fabrics take a 70 mm hem. DIY measuring

Measuring for S-fold curtains

Measure the track width, not the window, and extend past the glass on each side for stack-back. Measure the drop from the underside of the track position to the floor at three points and use the smallest. Tell us ceiling or wall fix and the floor finish you want. We allow for the heading and gliders.

S-Fold Curtains questions

What is the difference between S-fold and wave fold curtains?

Nothing. They are two names for the same heading: fabric on evenly spaced gliders that hangs in continuous waves.

How much fabric does an S-fold curtain need?

Usually around twice the track width, so the waves stay full when the curtain is closed. We calculate it from your measurements.

Can S-fold curtains be blockout?

Yes. Coated blockout and lined fabrics both work on an S-fold track. Pair one with a sheer on a double track for bedrooms.

Can I motorise an existing S-fold track?

Usually yes. The retrofit S-fold curtain motor in our DIY shop fits most tracks. Check the track profile with us first.

Can I order S-fold curtains online?

Yes. Measure the track width and drop with our guide, choose fabric from free samples, and we make the curtains and ship them with the track Australia-wide.
