Sheer curtains are the biggest change you can make to a room for the money. They soften hard light, hide the street without blocking the view, and make ceilings look taller when hung from the top. A plain window with a sheer on it stops looking like a hole in the wall and starts looking finished.

Below is what to decide on: the heading, the fabric, whether to layer a blockout behind for bedrooms, how the track will be operated, and how the curtain should finish at the floor.
S-fold sheer curtains
S-fold, also called wave fold, is the heading almost every modern sheer uses. The fabric hangs from a slim track on evenly spaced gliders, so it falls in smooth, continuous waves from top to bottom and stacks back neatly when open. There are no hooks showing and no pleats sewn into the top, which is why it suits floor to ceiling glass and minimal interiors.
To keep the waves full, an S-fold sheer is made at around twice the track width. We work that out from your measurements. The track can be fixed to the ceiling or to the wall on brackets, and drawn by hand, with a wand, or by a motor.

Linen look sheer curtains
Most sheers sold today are linen look: a polyester or blended weave with the slubbed texture of linen, but lighter, more stable and easier to care for. They hang evenly, do not shrink when cleaned, and hold their drop in a humid bathroom or a sunny north-facing room.
Natural linen sheers are softer and more relaxed, with a bit of movement in the weave. They crease, they can drop a little over time, and they need gentler cleaning. If you want the real thing and can live with that, they look beautiful. If you want set and forget, go linen look.
Colours run from bright white through ivory, oatmeal, sand and grey. Order free samples and hang them at the window. A sheer reads very differently with light coming through it than it does on a table.
Sheer and blockout layered curtains
A sheer on its own gives daytime privacy. Once the lights are on inside and it is dark outside, you can see straight through it from the street. For bedrooms, and for living rooms that face a neighbour or a road, the answer is a double track: the sheer on the front runner and a blockout curtain on the back runner.
During the day you run the sheer and keep the light. At night you draw the blockout for privacy and sleep. Both curtains share one track system on the ceiling or wall, so there is one set of fixings and one clean line across the window.
A blockout roller blind fitted behind the sheer does a similar job for less fabric, and is a common choice on smaller bedroom windows.

Both lanes get you the same curtain: made to your sizes in the fabric you chose. The difference is who measures and who fits the track.
DIY online suits anyone happy with a tape measure and a drill. You measure the track width and drop with our guide, pick the fabric from free samples, choose the track colour, stack side and floor finish, and we make the curtain and ship it with the track and fittings. You fix the track, hang the curtain, and you are done. It is the only option outside Melbourne.
Custom made and fitted is for Melbourne homes where you want it handled. Motorised sheer curtains
An S-fold track takes a motor. The motor sits at one end of the track, runs on a rechargeable battery, and moves the curtain with a remote. Add a smart hub and you can open and close the sheers from your phone, on a schedule, or by voice. Motors make most sense on wide spans, on glass you walk past all day, and in rooms with several curtains you want to move together.

Sheer curtain fabrics and colours
Sheers vary in weight and openness. A very light, open weave lets in the most light and shows the view clearly, but gives less privacy. A heavier sheer softens the room more and hides the interior better during the day. Textured weaves hide creasing and read warmer; plain weaves look crisper.
White and off-white are the safe choices and brighten a room. Warmer neutrals suit timber floors and earthy interiors. Greys suit cooler schemes and hide street dirt on a busy road. Whatever you lean towards, see it in your own light first. Samples are free.

How to measure for sheer curtains
Decide where the track goes first. Ceiling fixed is the cleanest look and makes the room feel taller. Wall fixed on brackets is the answer where the ceiling is not solid or there is a cornice in the way. Inside the window recess is possible on deep reveals but the curtain will not stack clear of the glass.
Measure the track width, not the window. Go past the window on each side so the curtain can stack back off the glass when open: the wider the curtain, the more stack-back it needs. Then measure the drop from the underside of the track position to the floor, at three points, and use the smallest. Tell us the finish you want: just off the floor, touching, or puddled.

Do sheer curtains give privacy at night?
Not on their own. With the lights on inside, sheers are see-through from outside. For bedrooms, pair them with a blockout curtain on a double track or a blockout roller blind behind.
What is an S-fold curtain?
An S-fold (also called wave fold) curtain runs on a track with evenly spaced gliders so the fabric hangs in smooth, continuous waves. It is the standard heading for modern sheers.
How much fabric do sheers use?
