Sheers are the curtain most people are after. A light, open weave that lets daylight through, hides the street during the day, and makes a room feel taller when hung from the ceiling. They go in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens and offices, and in bedrooms as the front layer of a double track.

Linen look weaves are the most popular because they are stable and easy to care for. Plain and textured sheers are available in whites, neutrals and greys. S-fold is the standard heading. Sheers on their own are see-through at night, so plan a blockout layer behind them in bedrooms.

Blockout curtains are made from a coated fabric, or a face fabric with a blockout lining sewn behind it, so no light passes through the curtain. They darken a bedroom, give full privacy at any hour, and add a real layer of insulation against a cold window in a Melbourne winter.

They are the right choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and rooms that overheat in the afternoon. A face fabric with a lining gives you the widest colour and texture choice. Fitted on a double track behind a sheer, they give you light by day and darkness by night. Fitted wide and high of the window, they close the light gaps at the edges.

Linen is the look most people are describing when they ask for relaxed, natural curtains. We make them in real linen and in linen look blends. Natural linen is soft with a loose, slubbed texture and some movement in the weave; it creases and settles over time. Linen look polyester blends give the texture without the upkeep, hold their drop and are easier to clean.

Both come as sheers and as heavier drapery weights. Line a heavier linen with blockout and you get a bedroom curtain that looks light and performs like a blockout.

The heading is the way the top of the curtain is made and how it hangs from the track. S-fold, also called wave fold, runs on gliders so the fabric falls in even, continuous waves with nothing showing above. It is the modern standard and suits sheers and blockouts alike.

Pinch pleat gathers the fabric into sewn groups of pleats at the top and hangs from hooks on a track, or from rings on a rod. It is the classic tailored look and uses more fabric. We make both. If you are not sure, S-fold is the safe choice for anything built or renovated recently, and pinch pleat suits heavier fabrics and more formal rooms.

Pinch pleat is the tailored heading: sewn groups of two or three pleats that hold their shape, stack neatly and suit velvet, linen and lined blockout fabrics. It hangs from hooks on a track, or from rings on a rod when you want the hardware on show.

Thermal curtains are lined or coated curtains made to cover the whole window and run to the floor, so they hold warmth in through a Melbourne winter and keep the heat out in summer. Velvet is the heaviest fabric we make up and does the same job with more colour and weight, and it takes the echo out of a hard floored room.

Every curtain needs something to hang from, and it comes with the curtain. Slimline tracks suit S-fold and pinch pleat and can be ceiling or wall fixed; double tracks carry a sheer and a blockout together. Rods with finials suit pinch pleat on rings and become part of the look. We supply the track or rod with every curtain, cut to size, and fit it ourselves in Melbourne. We do not sell tracks on their own.

Same curtain, two ways to get it. DIY online: you measure the track width and drop following our guide, choose fabric from free samples, pick heading, track colour, stack side, wand length and floor finish, and order. We make the curtains and ship them with the track and fittings. You fix the track and hang them. This is the cheaper route and the only one outside Melbourne.

Custom made and fitted: for Melbourne homes. We come out with sample books, measure every window, advise on fullness and track position in the room, and leave a written quote. When the curtains are made we fit the tracks and hang them. If you have tall windows, a double track, or a bay, this is the lane to use.

How DIY ordering works

Any S-fold track can be motorised. A battery motor at the end of the track moves the curtain on a remote, and a smart hub adds phone, schedule and voice control. Motors earn their keep on wide spans, on glass you walk past all day, and in rooms where several curtains should move together. Existing S-fold tracks can often be retrofitted with the curtain motor from our DIY shop.
