Plantation Shutters

PVC shutters are the workhorse of the range. The blades and stiles are a solid or reinforced polymer with a painted finish, so water does not swell them and steam does not lift the paint. That makes them the right choice for bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and any window above a sink or a bath.

They suit most standard windows in the rest of the house too. The finish is a smooth white or off-white that wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the colour stays consistent from room to room. Wide panels need support, so PVC shutters on very wide openings are usually split into more panels or reinforced internally. We plan that at the measure.

One material through the whole house keeps the look consistent from the bathroom to the living room, and keeps the price the same in every room.

Hinged panels are the standard. Each panel swings open on hinges fixed to the frame, like a small door, so you can open the whole window for cleaning or airflow. Most windows take two or four hinged panels.

Bi-fold panels are hinged to each other as well as to the frame, so they fold back in a concertina and stack to one side. They suit sliding doors and wide openings where you want to clear the glass completely.

Sliding panels run on a top track and slide across each other, the way a wardrobe door does. They are the answer where there is no room for panels to swing into the room, such as a door that opens onto a narrow hallway or a window behind a bench.

Panel layout, hinge side and stacking direction are all decided at the measure, in the room, with the furniture in place.

Blades come in a few widths. Narrow blades give a more traditional look with more lines across the window. Wider blades give a cleaner, more open view when tilted and let in more light. On big windows wider blades usually look better; on small windows narrow blades are more in proportion.

The tilt rod is what you push to angle the blades. A centre rod runs down the middle of each panel. A hidden rod sits at the back edge, so the blades move together but the front of the panel is uncut. Hidden rods are the more popular choice now because they give an uninterrupted face.

Closed blades block most light but not all. Small gaps at the blade edges let a little through, which most people find fine for a bedroom. If you need a room fully dark, tell us at the measure and we will talk through pairing the shutters with a blockout behind them.

Bay windows are where shutters shine. The frame is built in sections that follow the angles of the bay, so each face gets its own panels and the whole window reads as one fitted piece. We measure every angle on site rather than assume the bay is symmetrical, because they rarely are.

Sliding and French doors take bi-fold or sliding panels with a frame that clears the door handle and lets the door open. Arched windows can be fitted with a shaped top section above standard panels.

Wet areas get PVC every time. Bathroom windows, laundry windows and the window above the kitchen sink are the most common shutter jobs we do, because nothing else copes as well with steam and splashes while still looking finished.

A roller blind has a few millimetres of forgiveness. A shutter frame does not. If the opening is a few millimetres out of square, or the reveal is shallower than it looks, a frame made to the wrong numbers will not sit flush, and there is no adjusting it afterwards. That is why we measure shutters ourselves.
