Pinch pleat curtains have the fabric folded and stitched into groups at the top, with a flat space between each group. The pleats are fixed, so the heading keeps the same neat line every time the curtain is opened and closed.
They suit heavier lined fabrics and rooms that want a formal look. We make them to your measurements as double or triple pleats, on a track or a rod, DIY online or measured and fitted in Melbourne.
Double and triple pinch pleats
A double pinch pleat folds two pleats together at each point along the heading. A triple folds three. The triple is fuller and more formal. The double is leaner and suits a modern room.
The spacing between groups is set when the curtain is made, so the folds fall the same way down the whole drop. Because the pleats are fixed, the width cannot be adjusted later, so the track or rod measurement matters.
The tailored pinch pleat look
The stitched heading controls the fabric from the top down, so the folds stay upright and evenly spaced along the full drop. Open, the curtain stacks into a neat column beside the window. Closed, the pleats give the fabric a gentle rhythm. It suits formal living rooms, main bedrooms and period homes, and in a plain lined fabric it reads as crisp in a modern room too.
Pinch pleat curtains on tracks and rods
Pinch pleat curtains hang from hooks set into the back of each pleat. On a track the hooks run in gliders; on a rod they go into the eyes of the rod rings. The hardware takes the full weight of a lined curtain, so it needs solid fixing. A ceiling-fixed track or a pelmet hides the hardware; a rod with rings shows it.
Fullness and stacking
Pinch pleat curtains are cut with a generous fullness so each pleat holds its shape. Triple pleats stack wider than double when open. Extend the track past the glass so the open curtain sits on the wall, or use a double pleat on a narrow window.
Pinch pleat vs S-fold curtains
S-fold uses fixed glider spacing on a track to make a soft, continuous wave. Pinch pleat uses stitching to make defined pleats with flat fabric between them. S-fold is the modern look and takes a motor easily. Pinch pleat is the tailored look and suits heavier lined fabrics and pelmets.
Fabrics for pinch pleat curtains
Lined blockout is the most common: your face fabric with a blockout lining that adds weight and helps the pleats hang straight. Linen takes a double pinch pleat well. Velvet is the natural partner for a triple pinch pleat.
Double and triple pinch pleats compared
| Pleat | Fabric per pleat | Look | Stack when open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double pinch pleat | Two folds | Structured, leaner | Narrower |
| Triple pinch pleat | Three folds | Full, formal | Wider |
| Box pleat | Two folds, flat front | Tailored | Narrow |

DIY measuring
Measuring for pinch pleat curtains
Because the pleats are fixed, the finished width has to match the track or rod. Measure the track length, or the rod between the finials, and the drop from the glider or ring to where the curtain should finish. Tell us track or rod so we set the hook height.

Pinch Pleat Curtains questions
What is the difference between double and triple pinch pleat?
The number of folds stitched together at each pleat. Double is leaner and suits modern rooms. Triple is fuller, more formal and stacks wider when open.
Can pinch pleat curtains go on a rod?
Yes. The hooks fit into the eyes on rod rings. Tell us it is a rod and we set the hook height so the heading sits just below the rod.
Can I adjust the width of pinch pleat curtains?
No. The pleats are stitched at fixed spacing, so measure the track or rod carefully, or book a free measure in Melbourne.
Are pinch pleat curtains good for blockout?
Yes. A blockout lining behind a face fabric is the most common pinch pleat curtain.
Can I order pinch pleat curtains online?
Yes. Measure with our guide, choose the fabric and pleat style, and we ship Australia-wide.
